Incident Raises Community Concerns
Sunbury, Pa. — A 31-year-old Harrisburg resident, David Xavier Hernandez, was apprehended on June 10 for allegedly attempting to lure children into his vehicle at a local parking lot. The incident raised alarm among community members and local authorities.
Details of the Encounter
The suspected luring took place around 5:30 p.m. on a Saturday evening. Witnesses reported that Hernandez, who was in a silver Chevrolet Express van adorned with an American flag, called out to multiple children walking by. Notably, two women accompanying the children were also instructed to enter the vehicle. One of the women recorded the encounter, prompting concern and immediate action.
As the van departed the parking lot, the witness contacted law enforcement. She later identified the vehicle at a nearby Sunoco gas station, where police took Hernandez into custody.
Charges and Evidence Found
Upon arrest, officers discovered Hernandez had an outstanding warrant from the Northumberland County Sheriff’s Office. A subsequent search of the van uncovered a glass smoking pipe containing residue, suspected marijuana, and a medical marijuana container labeled with a different individual’s name. Notably, Hernandez possessed a medical marijuana card that had expired in October 2022.
Police have charged Hernandez with three felony counts of luring a child into a vehicle, as well as charges related to drug possession and several traffic violations.

District Judge Rachel Wiest-Benner set bail at $300,000, and Hernandez has since been detained at Northumberland County Prison. The case has stirred apprehension among residents, prompting discussions about child safety in the area.
