Tragic Incident in North Carolina: Parents Charged After 7-Year-Old’s Death

GASTONIA, NC — In a heart-wrenching development following the tragic death of 7-year-old Legend Jenkins, his parents have been charged with involuntary manslaughter and child neglect. The charges stem from the circumstances surrounding their decision to allow Legend and his 10-year-old brother to walk home alone after a trip to a nearby grocery store.

    Incident Details

The incident occurred last Tuesday, when Legend, while returning from the store, ran into traffic and was struck by a jeep driven by a 76-year-old woman. Gastonia Police report that the children were unsupervised when Legend darted into the street. Witnesses say the older brother attempted to restrain Legend, but was unable to prevent the tragic outcome.

“I was holding him in my arms, trying to comfort him,” recalls Summer Williams, a bystander who witnessed the accident. “Even at night, I still see his face. It’s heartbreaking.”

    Charges Against the Parents

Following the investigation, Legend’s mother, Jessica Ivey, and father, Samuele Jenkins, were arrested on Thursday. Each has been charged with felony involuntary manslaughter and child neglect. They were denied the opportunity to attend their son’s funeral and have been given a bond of $1.5 million, the highest allowed.

The Gastonia Police Department emphasized the importance of adult supervision for children. “In such cases, adults must be held accountable for their responsibilities to ensure a safe environment for their children,” a police statement read.

    Community Reaction

This tragic accident has sent shockwaves through the Gastonia community, where many are mourning the loss of a young life. Jessica Ivey stated that this was the first occasion her sons had been allowed to venture to the grocery store unaccompanied.

The driver of the vehicle involved in the incident will not face charges, as police found no evidence of wrongdoing or excessive speed on her part.

    Moving Forward

As the community grapples with this tragedy, the focus remains on ensuring child safety and accountability among guardians. The Jenkins family faces an uncertain future as they confront the grave consequences of their choices.

This story will be updated as more details emerge.
