Man Charged After Shooting Utility Worker in Texas Neighborhood

Magnolia, Texas — In a tragic turn of events, a 19-year-old utility worker was shot and critically injured while performing installation work in a Magnolia neighborhood. The incident, which the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office described as a disturbance between the worker and a local resident, occurred shortly after 1 p.m. on Tuesday.

    Incident Details

The victim, identified as Briley Delacruz Rodas, was engaged in the installation of fiber optic cables when the situation escalated into violence. Eyewitness accounts reveal that Rodas and another utility worker were confronted by a local resident, later identified as Keith Matthews, 53. According to court records, Matthews was reportedly unhappy with the presence of the construction crews, alleging they were trespassing on private property.

The confrontation escalated when Matthews began yelling at Rodas and his colleague, throwing cables and ultimately deploying pepper spray before pulling out a handgun and shooting Rodas multiple times in the back. As a result of the shooting, Rodas sustained severe injuries and remains hospitalized in stable condition.

    Charges and Legal Proceedings

Matthews has been arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. During his probable cause hearing, prosecutors outlined the details of the altercation, expressing concern over the dramatic escalation of the dispute. A bond of $200,000 has been set for Matthews as he awaits further legal proceedings.

Neighbors commented on the ongoing work by AT&T crews in the area, which has been taking place for several weeks without prior incidents.

    Community Impact

This shooting has sent shockwaves through the community, raising concerns about safety and the treatment of utility workers often engaged in essential infrastructure projects. UTILITY WORKERS face the risk of aggression and violence in the course of their duties, highlighting the need for greater awareness and protection.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding this incident, and further updates are expected as the legal process unfolds. Local authorities urge residents to promote peaceful dialogue and cooperation, particularly during ongoing neighborhood projects.
