Stockton Bakery Faces Rising Crime: City Officials Take Action

City Takes Steps to Curb Crime Near Historic Bakery

In Stockton, California, officials are mobilizing to combat crime that has recently plagued Genova Bakery, a beloved institution that has been serving the community for over a century. Owner Tim Canevari expressed serious concerns about the safety of his business and hinted he might consider relocating if the situation does not improve.

    Surveillance Measures Implemented

In response to a surge in criminal activity, the Stockton Police Department has deployed a Stockton Police Observation Truck (SPOT) outside the bakery. The truck is equipped with extensive surveillance cameras intended to monitor the surrounding area. "This is just a temporary help. It’s not going to eliminate the problem altogether, but maybe it will deter a little bit of what’s going on," said Canevari, highlighting his hopes for increased safety.

Canevari’s worries are not unfounded. Over the past year, two bullets have been fired into the bakery, and the area has long been notorious for street prostitution. The bakery’s location on North Sierra Nevada Street has made it a frequent target of criminal activity, and Canevari indicated he might have to move if action isn’t taken soon.

    Mayor Calls for Long-Term Solutions

Stockton Mayor Christina Fugazi acknowledged the challenges in the area, calling the SPOT initiative a crucial first step in addressing the crime issue. "It has to do with the individuals participating in this activity and making sure that they get the message that this will not be tolerated," she stated. The mayor emphasized that those involved in such behaviors should reconsider their actions in Stockton.

Data from the Stockton Police Department reveal an increase in calls for service in the vicinity. From January to May 2024, police responded to 200 calls, with 138 calls recorded so far this year, indicating a troubling trend that requires urgent action.

    History of Interventions

Previous police interventions included similar placements of the SPOT vehicle, which Canevari noted were effective when the vehicles were present. However, crime often resumed once the patrols ceased. In light of this history, both local law enforcement and city officials are optimistic that the renewed surveillance will serve as a deterrent in the area.

    Looking Ahead

As officials strategize for the future, the community hopes for a more permanent resolution to the crime that has disrupted not only the bakery but the neighborhood at large. City leaders are committed to sending a strong message that Stockton is not a welcoming environment for criminal behavior.

Developing updates on this story will be reported as more information becomes available.
