Drone Technology Aids in Capture of Fraud Suspect in Forest Park

    Incident Overview

Forest Park, Georgia — June 17, 2023— A man suspected of fraud was apprehended by local police after an intense foot chase, aided significantly by a drone employed under the Forest Park Police’s first responder program. This incident underscores the growing role of advanced technology in law enforcement operations.

    Details of the Pursuit

The situation unfolded when officers received a report about a man using stolen credit cards at an Army surplus store. Upon arrival, they recognized the suspect, who was already under investigation for fraud. When officers attempted to detain him, he fled on foot.

Joshua Wilson, the Remote Pilot in Command for the Forest Park Police, activated the drone from the command center to track the suspect in real time. “I think this is the future of law enforcement, honestly,” Wilson stated. He noted that the suspect remained oblivious to the drone’s surveillance, believing he had evaded police.

    Heat-Related Emergency Averted

In a desperate bid to escape, the suspect sought refuge inside a closed tractor-trailer, which quickly turned dangerously hot. “There’s no ventilation… and he’s in a metal box on a very hot day,” explained Wilson, noting that the man was at risk of serious heat-related illness. Following directions provided by the drone, officers located the suspect and opened the trailer doors just in time. Upon extraction, the suspect appeared weak and overheated. “He almost fell off the back as they were trying to get him down,” Wilson revealed, emphasizing that the situation could have escalated into a medical emergency.

The Role of Drones in Law Enforcement

The Forest Park Police Department’s drone program, now in its second year, is designed to enhance officer safety as well as that of suspects. Unlike traditional support tools, these drones serve as active responders, often arriving at the scene before patrol units. They provide critical real-time intelligence, enabling police to assess situations before engaging on foot.

Wilson described the operation of the drone as similar to playing a video game, with the device able to autonomously fly to a marked location before manual control is assumed. This approach conducts more precise and efficient law enforcement.

    Conclusion

The successful capture highlighted the effectiveness of integrating technology into police work, raising questions about future applications of drones in similar circumstances. As the Forest Park Police continue to refine their programs, they cite this incident as proof of the drones’ potential to enhance safety for both officers and civilians.

Further updates may follow as the investigation continues.
