Long Island Father Arrested for Leaving Toddler in Hot Car

Centereach Incident Raises Concerns Over Child Safety

In a disturbing incident that underscores the dangers of leaving children unattended in vehicles, a Long Island father has been arrested after allegedly leaving his 2-year-old son in a parked car under extreme heat conditions. Keniarold Andre, 36, is facing charges of endangering the welfare of a child after authorities say he abandoned the boy in a Toyota Highlander while shopping at Walmart in Centereach.

Extreme Temperatures and Quick Action from a Good Samaritan

The alarming event occurred around 1:40 p.m. on Tuesday, as temperatures in the area soared to around 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The vehicle’s engine was turned off, and a window was cracked only slightly, significantly raising the risk of heat-related incidents.

A concerned passerby spotted the young child sleeping in the car and promptly called 911. Responding officers from the Suffolk County Police Department successfully unlocked the vehicle and rescued the boy within approximately 20 minutes. Officers found the child in a concerning state but were able to provide immediate care until emergency medical technicians arrived on the scene.

    Father’s Return and Subsequent Arrest

Andre returned to the parking lot as medics were assessing his son’s condition. His immediate presence did not deter law enforcement from taking action; he was arrested on the spot. The child was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for evaluation and is reported to be in stable condition, a reassurance after the distressing ordeal.

Authorities have indicated that the boy will be placed with a family member following his recovery, aiming to ensure his safety and well-being.

    Upcoming Court Appearance

Keniarold Andre is scheduled for arraignment at the First Central District Court in Central Islip on Wednesday. The charges against him highlight the critical importance of monitoring children and the severe ramifications of neglecting their safety in potentially life-threatening situations.

This developing story reflects ongoing concerns regarding child safety in vehicles, particularly in extreme weather conditions. Community members are reminded to remain vigilant and responsive in situations where children may be at risk.
