Disney+ Unveils Gritty Korean Crime Thriller "Gold Land"

Streaming Platform Expands Korean Original Programming

Disney+ has added to its expansive lineup of Korean original series with the announcement of "Gold Land," a gripping crime thriller that blends high-stakes action with emotional depth. The series, developed by acclaimed screenwriter Hwang Joyoon, famed for his work on the cult classic "Oldboy," and directed by Kim Sunghoon, known for the drama "Chief Detective 1958," promises to deliver a suspenseful viewing experience.

    Plot Overview

Set against the backdrop of rural Korea, "Gold Land" dives into the tumultuous life of Kim Heeju, portrayed by Park Boyoung, a familiar face from the series "Light Shop." Heeju unexpectedly acquires gold bars that are tied to a dangerous smuggling syndicate, thereby embroiling herself in a harrowing fight for survival. As she attempts to evade this violent network, she is inevitably drawn back to her hometown, a place she had hoped to leave behind.

Co-starring in the series is Kim Sung Cheol, who takes on the role of Jang Wook, nicknamed “Woogy.” He is a dark figure from Heeju’s past, now on a relentless pursuit to recover the stolen gold bars for the syndicate.

    A Promising Addition to Disney+’s K-Content Lineup

According to Disney, "Gold Land" is crafted to uphold the high standards set by Hwang’s previous works, blending thrilling action with emotional resonance. The streaming service has yet to announce an official release date for the series, leaving fans eagerly awaiting further details.

This announcement comes as part of Disney+’s broader strategy to cement its presence in the Asia-Pacific region, focusing heavily on Korean content. Recent productions include popular titles such as "Unmasked," a psychological drama, and the sci-fi series "Hyper Knife." Upcoming releases in the latter half of 2025 are anticipated to include the treasure-hunting adventure "Low Life," featuring Ryu Seung-ryong, as well as the international thriller "Tempest," boasting a diverse cast that includes Jun Gianna and John Cho.

As the release date for "Gold Land" approaches, viewers are encouraged to stay tuned for updates on what promises to be another thrilling addition to Disney+’s repertoire of Korean originals.
