Mayflies USA’s ‘Kickless Kids’: An Energetic Comeback Worth the Wait

After over two decades of silence, Mayflies USA has made a triumphant return with their new album, Kickless Kids. This long-awaited release serves as a wake-up call to fans old and new, offering a slice of nostalgia that feels simultaneously fresh and reflective.

    A Reunion Fueled by Life

I had a chance to catch the invigorated dB’s live last fall, and, surprise! They were accompanied by the Mayflies USA—an introduction I didn’t know I needed. Despite their earlier works, Summertown (1998) and The Pity List (2000) being produced by the dBs’ own Chris Stamey, I somehow missed the memo. Their catchy opening set, blending classic hits and tantalizing new tunes, set the stage for what was to come.

The Album You’ve Been Waiting For

Now, let’s dive into Kickless Kids, where the power pop vibes of the past collide with a newly mature perspective. It’s a victory lap that reflects years of life experience, making it a layered tapestry of sound and emotion. The album opens with the track “Thought the Rain Was Gone,” immediately resonating with a vibe that might remind some listeners of Guided by Voices—but the chorus takes you on a delightful detour.

With every beat, Kickless Kids pulls listeners into a world of toe-tapping jives—interspersed with quieter, soul-searching moments. The lyrical content is raw and relatable, addressing themes of mortality and nostalgia amidst a backdrop of expertly layered instrumentals. The first half is particularly engaging, striking that sweet balance between catchy melodies and introspective storytelling.

Country Twang Meets Rock ‘n’ Roll

As the album rolls on, the Mayflies USA take a fascinating turn, leaning into country influences that are highlighted in tracks like “Summer Kept Slippin’” and “Come on Down.” These songs offer a rich twang that gradually reveals its depth, encouraging repeated listens. The energy doesn’t drop, however, as they ramp it back up with a powerful rocker, “Twilight’s Alright,” leading into the reflective closer, “Roll It Down the Line.” This final track poignantly grapples with farewells and endings, giving the album a satisfying emotional arc.

    A Heartfelt Return

In Kickless Kids, the Mayflies USA have crafted an album that bravely faces the realities of life, loss, and growth as musicians and individuals. Whether you’re a die-hard fan from the early 2000s or a newcomer catching on to their magic, this album encapsulates both the joy and the melancholy that comes with age.

Here’s hoping we don’t have to wait another 20 years for their next masterpiece—because if Kickless Kids is any indication, the Mayflies USA still have plenty of stories left to tell!
