Former Lawyer of Fotis Dulos Admits to Interference in Disappearance Case of Jennifer Dulos

    Kent Mawhinney Sentenced for Interference

Kent Mawhinney, the former attorney of the late Fotis Dulos, has pleaded guilty to interfering with police during the investigation into the disappearance of Jennifer Dulos, Fotis’s estranged wife, who is now believed to be dead. Mawhinney was sentenced to 11 months in prison as part of a plea agreement that notably reduced his initial charges from conspiracy to commit murder.

    Background on a Tragic Case

Jennifer Dulos vanished in May 2019 amid a contentious custody battle and divorce from Fotis Dulos, raising alarm among family and authorities. In June 2023, a Connecticut probate court judge officially declared her dead following a petition from her mother. Fotis Dulos faced murder charges in connection with his wife’s disappearance but died by suicide in January 2020. In a related case, Fotis’s girlfriend, Michelle Troconis, was convicted on multiple counts related to Jennifer’s case and was sentenced to 20 years in prison in May 2024.

    Mawhinney’s Continued Denial

Mawhinney, while maintaining his innocence, stated, “No. If I did, I would tell them,” when asked if he knew anything about Jennifer Dulos’s fate. His sentence comes after spending time in custody awaiting trial, during which he remained steadfast in denying any involvement or knowledge regarding the circumstances of her disappearance.

    Family’s Statements Reflect Ongoing Pain

Following Mawhinney’s sentencing, Jennifer Dulos’s family and friends issued a statement expressing gratitude towards the state’s attorney’s office and law enforcement for their ongoing commitment to seeking justice in the case. They emphasized that despite Mawhinney’s plea, the evidence against him was substantial enough to warrant the conspiracy charges, which were dropped primarily to avoid the emotional and financial toll of a lengthy trial.

Carrie Luft, speaking on behalf of Jennifer’s family, stated, “We believe that someone possesses additional knowledge about where she is” and urged anyone with relevant information to come forward.

    Contrasting Perspectives on Justice

The family of Michelle Troconis, meanwhile, criticized the decision to reduce Mawhinney’s charges, claiming it reflects a disturbing inconsistency within the justice system. Their statement underscored their belief that the prosecution has unjustly targeted Troconis, stating, “Today’s outcome only reinforces what we have known all along: This case has never been about equal justice.”

As this complex case continues to unfold, questions remain surrounding the circumstances of Jennifer Dulos’s disappearance and the involved parties’ fates. Legal experts and the community are being encouraged to examine the fairness of the judicial process in this high-profile case.
