Jurors Deliberate in Karen Read Trial Accused of Killing Boston Police Officer

Dramatic Proceedings at Norfolk Superior Court

Jurors have resumed deliberations in the high-profile case of Karen Read, who is charged with the murder of her boyfriend, John O’Keefe, a Boston police officer. The trial, which has captivated public attention, took place at the Norfolk Superior Court in Dedham, Massachusetts. Jurors were confirmed by Judge Beverly Cannone to have had no access to case information over the weekend as they prepared to reach a verdict.

Read, 45, a former adjunct professor, has pleaded not guilty to multiple charges including second-degree murder and vehicle manslaughter while driving under the influence. Prosecutors assert that Read struck O’Keefe with her Lexus SUV during a snowstorm on January 29, 2022, at a gathering in Canton, Massachusetts. This trial marks a critical moment following an earlier trial that ended with a hung jury.

    Divergent Narratives Present in Courtroom

In closing arguments presented last Friday, Prosecutor Hank Brennan emphasized the evidence pointing to Read’s culpability. He described O’Keefe as a “decent man” who was in distress that night and relied on Read for assistance. Instead of seeking help, Read allegedly fled the scene, choosing to abandon O’Keefe despite knowing his vulnerability.

Brennan highlighted physical evidence and data from Read’s SUV and O’Keefe’s phone to establish a timeline supporting the prosecution’s claims. First responders reported that Read admitted to hitting O’Keefe, further complicating her defense.

Conversely, the defense maintains that O’Keefe suffered injuries at the home of another officer, Brian Albert, where he was allegedly left outside during the blizzard after an attack by a German Shepherd named Chloe. They argue this narrative casts doubt on the prosecution’s case.

    Awaiting a Verdict

The jury, comprised of 12 members, deliberated for approximately 90 minutes before breaking for the day. They are expected to continue their discussions on the charges against Read, which carry severe implications for her future. The timeline for a verdict remains uncertain, though announcements are anticipated shortly after the jury reaches a decision.

As the courtroom awaits the outcome, the case continues to generate significant media coverage and public interest, reflecting the complex nature of a criminal trial entwined with emotional and legal intricacies.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
