    Traveling Through Uncertainty: Cameron Mofid’s Journey with OCD

    Cameron Mofid, a young man from San Diego, has wrestled with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) since he was a child. He describes this mental health condition as a persistent experience of unwanted thoughts and fears that can take a toll on one’s emotional state. For Cameron, travel emerged as a transformative tool, helping him navigate not just the world, but also his internal landscape of uncertainty.

    The Liberating Stress of Travel

    OCD thrives on control—managing environments, routines, and outcomes to stave off anxiety. However, travel, with its inherent unpredictability, became a paradoxical ally for Cameron. He discovered that navigating foreign cities, where nothing is familiar and comfort zones are challenged, pushed him to surrender control. “The discomfort of figuring things out in places where you don’t speak the language can be challenging, but it’s also freeing,” he shares.

    This mindset allowed Cameron to cope with his condition, evolving from an escape to a journey of healing. Travel not only broadened his geographical horizons but also taught him essential lessons about resilience and adaptability.

    A World Record and a Deeper Purpose

    During the COVID-19 pandemic, amidst a personal low, Cameron set an ambitious goal: to visit every country in the world. By April 2025, he achieved this monumental challenge, becoming one of the youngest individuals—if not the youngest—to complete this journey. In doing so, he transformed travel into a vehicle for personal growth.

    Cameron’s travels enabled him to engage with diverse cultures, deepening his understanding of both the world and himself. He emphasized that visiting each country went beyond mere tourism; it was about making meaningful connections with others and learning to embrace the unknown.

    Navigating Highs and Lows

    While Cameron’s expedition was largely fulfilling, it was not without its hardships. During his travels, he faced sickness and the loneliness often inherent in solo exploration. Cameron reflected on the emotional isolation that can accompany long periods away from familiar faces; however, he also highlighted the friendships forged during his journey, affirming, “Travel helped me recognize that mental health disorders don’t discriminate.”

    Grounded and Grateful

    Now back in California, Cameron is adjusting to life after his monumental adventure. He carries with him newfound wisdom about himself and relationships with others. He learned that overcoming challenges, whether in travel or in dealing with mental health, is a deeply personal journey.

    For those grappling with similar issues, Cameron’s experience serves as a gentle reminder that finding ways to embrace uncertainty—be it through travel, mindfulness practices, or connecting with others—can lead to positive change.

    Practical Insights for Dealing with OCD and Uncertainty

    1. Embrace Discomfort: Stepping out of your comfort zone can provide valuable life lessons and a new perspective on sensitivity towards uncertainty.
