Former Louisville Basketball Star Arrested for DUI

    Early Morning Incident

Louisville, KY — Russ Smith, a former star player for the University of Louisville’s basketball team, was arrested early Sunday morning on charges of driving under the influence (DUI) and reckless driving. The arrest occurred shortly after midnight when Smith allegedly made an illegal U-turn near the intersection of Baxter Avenue and Highland Avenue, as detailed in a report from the Louisville Metro Police Department.

    Details of the Arrest

According to police, Detective Kyle Willis observed Smith driving a 2018 Maserati with expired plates and reported that Smith’s vehicle crossed several lanes before entering a crosswalk. During the traffic stop, officers claimed they detected the odor of alcohol on Smith’s breath. In a statement to the police, Smith admitted to consuming "two Bourbon pours neat" prior to driving.

Smith submitted to a field sobriety test where he reportedly exhibited signs of impairment. His Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) was measured at 0.073—slightly below the legal limit of 0.08 in Kentucky, although he initially tested at 0.06 at the scene.

    Legal Representation and Statements

Smith is being represented by prominent Louisville defense attorney Steve Romines, known for his previous work with high-profile clients. In a statement issued following the arrest, Romines contended that "the evidence, witnesses, and surveillance footage will clearly show that Russ did nothing wrong."

“If he was below the legal limit both times, why was he still arrested? We look forward to litigating this matter in court where his innocence will be proven,” Romines added.

Legal experts, including long-time DUI attorney Paul Gold, noted the officer’s discretion in making an arrest may impact the case. “The officer cannot determine whether the driver’s blood alcohol level is rising or falling at the time of the stop,” Gold explained. Additionally, Kentucky law allows for DUI charges at a BAC of 0.04 if other evidence supports impairment.

    Upcoming Court Date

Smith has been charged with DUI, reckless driving, and driving with unregistered plates. He has since been released without bail and is scheduled to appear in Jefferson District Court on June 11.

The former Louisville player was part of the 2013 team that won a national championship, later vacated by the NCAA. Smith is also expected to compete in The Basketball Tournament (TBT) this summer, representing "TheVille," a team comprised of former Louisville stars.

As the legal proceedings unfold, updates regarding Smith’s case are anticipated.
