Utah Woman Faces Additional Charges Linked to Husband’s Death

Accusations of Murder and Financial Crimes Build Against Kouri Richins

Summit County, UT — Kouri Richins, a 34-year-old Utah woman already facing charges for allegedly killing her husband, has been hit with 26 new felony counts in connection with both financial fraud and her husband’s death. The latest charges were filed on Friday in Summit County Court, further complicating an already high-profile case that has garnered significant media attention.

    New Felony Charges

Richins is charged with five counts of mortgage fraud, seven counts of money laundering, five counts of forgery, seven counts of issuing bad checks, in addition to one count each of communications fraud and engaging in a pattern of unlawful activity. Prosecutors assert that these financial offenses are interconnected with the circumstances surrounding her husband Eric Richins’ death in March 2022.

Initially charged with some of these offenses, Richins had them separated into a distinct trial following a ruling by the court. Her trial for the murder charges is scheduled to commence in February 2026.

Allegations of Deception and Financial Mismanagement

Authorities claim that Kouri Richins poisoned a drink intended for her husband with the intent to secure control of his financial assets. Court documents revealed that in 2019, Kouri used a power of attorney to obtain a $250,000 home equity line of credit against Eric Richins’ property without his knowledge. This act of deceit reportedly created substantial tension within their marriage.

By the time of her husband’s death, Kouri’s real estate business was burdened with nearly $5 million in debt, as financial records indicated she was on the brink of economic collapse. Prosecutors noted that by late 2021, she was already delinquent on multiple loans while attempting to borrow more from high-interest lenders to cover her accumulating debts.

    Life Insurance Misunderstanding

Interestingly, Kouri Richins believed she was the beneficiary of her husband’s life insurance policy; however, this apparently changed after Eric discovered her alleged financial deceit. The fatal miscalculation could jeopardize her financial aspirations following a tragedy that has left many perplexed and seeking answers.

    Defense Stance

Defense attorneys representing Kouri Richins argue that the newly filed financial charges highlight the "weakness" of the murder accusations lodged against her. They maintain that the prosecution’s case is built on circumstantial evidence rather than concrete proof of wrongdoing.

As the legal proceedings unfold, the specter of this tragic case looms large over both the Richins family and the greater community, raising questions about trust, betrayal, and the lengths to which individuals may go for financial security.
