Lewiston Police Department Secures Federal Grant for Portable Security Cameras
Investigation and Community Safety Measures on the Rise
LEWISTON, Maine — In a proactive effort to combat escalating crime, particularly gun violence, the Lewiston Police Department has secured a $70,000 federal grant to introduce 14 portable security cameras throughout Maine’s second-largest city. The cameras are designed to deter criminal activity and provide vital visual evidence for ongoing investigations.
Lieutenant Derrick St. Laurent highlighted the versatility of these cameras, stating, “We can move them around to specific city events. If we have something going on in the park, we can relocate them there to enhance security.” This adaptable approach comes at a critical time, as Lewiston has witnessed a troubling increase in gun-related incidents. Recently, several vehicles parked outside the Masjidu Salaam Mosque were hit by gunfire, raising concerns among the city’s residents and local business operators.
Community Concerns and Calls for Increased Police Presence
Malcolm Tariq, the manager of Seven Days Market on Bartlett Street, expressed skepticism regarding the efficacy of added cameras. He emphasized a preference for a more visible police presence, suggesting, “A criminal coming face-to-face with an officer is more effective.” Pointing to the existing plethora of surveillance cameras in the area, Tariq noted, “I have 24 cameras at my store. If you go to a nearby store, they have 18 cameras. Cameras alone aren’t the solution.”
Despite acknowledging the limitations of physical patrols, Lt. St. Laurent responded with reassurance, “We can’t have an officer everywhere all the time, but we do have foot patrols, and we have enhanced our patrol presence in the downtown area.” The police department hopes that the strategic deployment of these cameras will serve as a deterrent and provide the community with a greater sense of safety.
Looking Ahead
The portable security cameras are expected to be operational later this summer, with authorities aiming to deploy them strategically across the city during public events and in areas identified as having higher crime rates. “This is about enhancing security and ensuring our citizens feel safe,” St. Laurent added.
As Lewiston grapples with community anxieties regarding safety, the introduction of these security measures marks a significant step in the ongoing effort to reduce crime and foster a safer environment for all residents.
While no injuries have been reported in recent shooting incidents, the situation continues to develop, and local authorities remain focused on improving the safety and security of the community.
