Rethinking Leadership in the Age of AI

    The AI Adoption Landscape

Recent reports indicate that nearly half of tech executives are integrating agentic AI into their workplaces. This trend raises an essential question: what is delaying the other half? As generative AI and intelligent agents transform how businesses operate, the hesitation to adapt could itself become a significant risk.

Salesforce’s Andy Valenzuela recently stated, “Every job should be rethought”—a sentiment that resonates deeply in today’s fast-paced work environment.

    Shifting Leadership Paradigms

For over two decades, I’ve held various leadership roles, watching industries evolve, especially with the rise of AI. From my time at Google to leading teams at Evernote and Glean, the common thread has been the accelerating pace of change. However, nothing has impacted my leadership approach quite like the current AI landscape.

In the past, I viewed effective leadership as a blend of urgency, decisiveness, and an omniscient grasp of details. My days were filled with meetings and messages, where being busy was a badge of honor. Yet this frantic cycle often felt more robotic than human, leaving little room for reflection.

    The AI Inflection Point

At first, I began leveraging AI for mundane tasks—summarizing reports, crafting emails, and synthesizing customer data. The benefits were quickly apparent: AI agents didn’t merely save me time; they cleared cognitive overload, allowing me to focus on what truly mattered.

For example, condensing complex reports or automating communications enabled me to engage more thoughtfully with my team and clients. Suddenly, I found myself mentoring employees, brainstorming product visions, and writing company updates with a human touch that had been missing when I was merely trying to survive the workday.

A New Era of Thoughtful Leadership

Now, AI agents comprise 60% to 70% of my daily tasks, handling everything from status reports to initial communications. This delegation has not only alleviated my workload but has also liberated my mindset. My focus has shifted from reactive problem-solving to strategic thinking.

A colleague recently remarked, “You’re asking bigger questions.” This transformation encapsulates the real power of AI: it helps you restore your capacity for deep thought and authentic engagement, redefining what it means to lead.

Embracing AI as a Leadership Ally

The crux of effective leadership is no longer about exerting control or adhering to rigid plans; those concepts are outdated in a world where AI evolves faster than any long-term strategy.

With AI increasingly becoming a staple of our workflows, it’s essential for leaders to transition from a command-and-control mindset to one of contextual coaching. This means designing an environment where teams can thrive without micromanagement.

    Key Actions for Leaders:

    • Invest in Training: Equip teams with the skills needed to collaborate effectively with AI.
    • Establish Clear Principles: Create frameworks for decision-making that empower employees to use AI judiciously.
    • Redesign Workflows: Integrate AI tools into everyday processes to maximize efficiency and creativity.

    The Road Ahead

For executives still trying to maintain control, it’s time to reconsider that approach. Scaling personal impact isn’t about doing everything yourself; it’s about leveraging AI to amplify your team’s capabilities.

Start small. Delegate tasks that consume excessive time and energy. Reallocate that time towards what truly requires your humanity: offering genuine feedback, engaging with customers, or expressing gratitude.

AI can automate many functions, but it cannot replicate the emotional intelligence and connection that characterize effective leadership. As we navigate this new era, let’s prioritize the qualities that make us human while embracing the efficiency AI offers.

In this transformative landscape, the call to action is clear: reimagine your leadership strategy for today’s world, and in doing so, redefine the very nature of work itself.
