Knife-Wielding Threat: U.S. Attorney Targeted in Albany

ALBANY, NY — In a startling incident that has sparked widespread concern, U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of New York, John Sarcone, was allegedly chased and threatened by an armed individual late Tuesday evening outside the Hilton Hotel in Albany. The assailant has been identified as Saul Morales-Garcia, a 40-year-old illegal immigrant from El Salvador with a significant criminal record.

Chaos on the Streets of Albany

According to Albany County prosecutors, Morales-Garcia lunged at Sarcone with a knife, threatening to "slit his throat" as he aggressively approached the attorney. The alleged attack occurred shortly before 10 p.m., prompting Sarcone to flee down the street while nearby sheriff’s deputies swiftly intervened. Fortunately, Sarcone was uninjured during the incident.

Morales-Garcia was apprehended almost immediately after the confrontation and is currently in custody without bail. He faces serious charges, including attempted second-degree murder. Local authorities describe the encounter as appearing “random,” though Morales-Garcia’s background adds layers of concern.

    Criminal History and Immigration Status

Morales-Garcia’s criminal record is extensive, having been previously convicted of felony offenses in El Salvador. He has also been deported from the United States at least once and is reported to be in the country illegally. Investigators noted that he has a criminal history in at least three other states outside of New York, although details about his recent entry into the country remain unclear.

    Politicians Respond to Incident

Following the incident, Albany County District Attorney Lee Kindlon emphasized the seriousness of threats against any individual, stating, “It’s important that everybody understands that we take these things seriously—whether you’re the U.S. Attorney or an average citizen.”

The situation has ignited backlash against Governor Kathy Hochul from political figures such as Republican Representative Elise Stefanik. She criticized Hochul for policies that she believes prioritize illegal immigrants over the safety of New York residents. “In Kathy Hochul’s New York, nobody is safe, not even President Trump’s U.S. Attorney,” Stefanik asserted.

    Ongoing Developments

As the legal process unfolds, further details are anticipated regarding Morales-Garcia’s immigration status and history. The Department of Homeland Security has not yet provided a comment on the matter.

This incident underscores ongoing debates around immigration policy and public safety, amplifying concerns around crime and illegal immigration in New York. U.S. Attorney Sarcone, appointed by Attorney General Pam Bondi earlier this year, has not yet made a public statement following the threats made against him.
