Wishy Takes Flight: The Rising Stars of Indie Pop
In the vibrant landscape of indie pop, Wishy has swiftly emerged from Indianapolis, and their ascent seems unstoppable. The band’s recent release, the Planet Popstar EP, follows their acclaimed debut album, Triple Seven, which left critics swooning and landed spots on 2024’s must-listen lists from powerhouses like GQ, The New York Times, and Alt Press.
Touring Triumphs and Musical Chemistry
Although Wishy has only hit the road three times—mostly as openers—they’re thrilled about their latest gig with fellow 90s-influenced group Momma. This collaboration felt like a perfect fit, as lead singer/guitarist Kevin Krauter shares, “We were so excited to get the Momma dates because we knew them already.”
But with success comes a sprinkle of nervousness. Krauter admits that the band’s newfound attention has left some of them feeling a bit exposed. Guitarist/singer Nina Pitchkites echoes this sentiment, saying, “When I started making music, it was hard to attract an audience. Now that people are listening, I feel a little naked.”
An Underground Gem in Indy Music
Despite its relative obscurity, Indianapolis boasts a rich musical culture. Krauter has long been a familiar face, previously banding with Hoops, while Pitchkites finds creative outlets through her solo endeavor, Pushop. As part of a flourishing scene, they celebrate their connections at State Street Pub, a local hotspot where anyone can catch a show and discover fresh talent.
Crafting the Sound of Tomorrow
What’s most enchanting about Wishy is their knack for blending sounds with infectious pop sensibilities. They’ve honed their songwriting skills, pulling from unique influences—Pitchkites cites Shania Twain and Liz Phair, while Krauter’s ear is attuned to bands like Jimmy Eat World and Fishmans.
Their latest EP, Planet Popstar, serves as a playful exploration of musical ideas that originally sprouted during the Triple Seven sessions. “We decided to have a little more fun with the production this time,” Krauter explains. The band embraced a more experimental vibe, adding a fresh flair to tracks and shifting the mood from alt-country to poppy beats.
Collaborative Creativity
While Krauter and Pitchkites started as the primary songwriters, the dynamics are shifting as the band grows. Newly invigorating contributions from members Dimitri Morris, Mitch Collins, and Conner Host are leading to richer collaborative songwriting. “We just had a writing boot camp,” says Krauter, showcasing their commitment to evolving as a unit.
What’s Next for Wishy?
With a performance scheduled at Riot Fest in September and a follow-up album already in the works, Wishy is ready to take their sound even further. While the new EP hints at experimentation, Krauter assures fans that the next project will build on the foundation laid by Triple Seven. “We’ve been locking in more and more as a band, and I’m really excited about recording these songs.”
So, whether you’re a die-hard fan or a newcomer to their sound, strap in—Wishy is just getting started, and the ride is bound to be thrilling!
