Repeat Offender Arrested for Anti-Muslim Attack on Queens Train
In a disturbing incident highlighting the ongoing issue of hate crimes, Naved Durrni, a 34-year-old man with a documented history of anti-Muslim violence, has been arrested again after allegedly assaulting a Muslim woman on a New York City subway. This latest attack took place on Wednesday morning aboard a Jamaica-bound E train, marking yet another chapter in Durrni’s troubling criminal history.
The Attack
Around 4 a.m., Durrni confronted a 55-year-old woman wearing a hijab as the train passed through the 75th Avenue station. According to a criminal complaint, he approached her aggressively, asking, "Where are you from? Are you Muslim?" When the woman confirmed her faith, Durrni reportedly began to punch and slap her in the face, head, and neck. He also allegedly kicked her in the face, resulting in significant injuries.
The victim sustained fractures to her nasal and orbital bones, along with extensive bruising. She was subsequently treated at a local hospital for her injuries. Durrni fled the scene but was apprehended just a few blocks away from the train station.
Previous Offenses
Durrni is no stranger to the legal system, with six prior arrests to his name, including a series of hate crimes against Muslim individuals in the summer of 2021. During that spree, he was accused of randomly attacking Muslim victims in several instances:
- Punching a man and tugging on a woman’s hijab while verbally abusing them.
- Attacking another couple, injuring a woman, and fracturing her nose.
- Threatening a victim with a knife when she attempted to call 911.
Despite the severity of these offenses, it remains unclear how Durrni was released following his previous hate crime incidents. He had been convicted of second-degree aggravated harassment in 2022.
Current Charges and Court Proceedings
Following his latest arrest, Durrni was charged with hate crime assault and aggravated harassment. During his arraignment, he was ordered held without bail by Judge Michael Katz. Durrni is scheduled to appear in court again on Monday to face these new charges.
This case serves as a sobering reminder of the persistent issues surrounding hate crimes and the judicial responses to such acts of violence. As investigations continue, community leaders are calling for greater vigilance and stronger measures to protect vulnerable populations from similar attacks.
