Former NFL Star Richard Sherman Charged with DUI in Washington State

    Background on the Incident

Richard Sherman, a Super Bowl champion and former defensive back for the Seattle Seahawks, has been charged with driving under the influence (DUI) following an incident that occurred on February 24, 2024. This marks Sherman’s second brush with DUI-related charges since 2021.

    Arrest Details

Sherman, 37, was pulled over by a Washington State trooper on Interstate 405 at approximately 2 a.m. on the morning of his arrest. According to the police report, he was traveling at 79 miles per hour in a 60 mph zone and was reportedly weaving within his lane, which prompted the traffic stop.

When approached by the trooper, Sherman stated that he had consumed two margaritas before driving. He refused to take a breath test, which is classified as a gross misdemeanor under Washington state law. This refusal could result in a more severe penalty upon conviction. However, he did consent to perform voluntary field sobriety tests, which led the officers to conclude that he was impaired.

After obtaining a signed warrant, police collected a blood sample from Sherman approximately two hours after the initial stop. The results revealed a blood-alcohol concentration of around 0.11, significantly above the legal limit of 0.08.

    Previous Legal Troubles

Sherman’s current charges were filed on a Tuesday shortly after the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office received the blood test results from a local crime lab. This incident follows a previous arrest in July 2021, where Sherman faced charges for drunk driving and domestic disturbance. In that case, he was accused of crashing his vehicle into a construction zone and attempting to break into his in-laws’ home. He ultimately pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor charges in March 2022.

    Career and Current Work

A standout player at Seattle from 2011 to 2017 and crucial in leading the Seahawks to victory in Super Bowl XLVIII, Sherman later spent time with the San Francisco 49ers and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before announcing his retirement in 2021. Since then, Sherman has transitioned to broadcasting, serving as a pre and postgame analyst for Prime Video’s "Thursday Night Football" and as a panelist on FS1’s "Undisputed."

As this story develops, further updates may include court dates and additional statements from parties involved.
