Federal Search for Father Accused of Killing Daughters Near Leavenworth
A federal helicopter conducted a nighttime search in Kittitas County, Washington, for Travis Decker, a man suspected of murdering his three daughters at a campground. This tragic incident occurred earlier this month, with police finding the bodies of 9-year-old Paityn, 8-year-old Evelyn, and 5-year-old Olivia Decker near Rock Island Campground on June 2.
Discovery of the Bodies
Authorities reported that the girls were discovered approximately 75 to 100 yards down an embankment, with disturbing evidence indicating foul play. Court documents mentioned that the children’s wrists appeared to have been zip-tied, and each had a plastic bag over her head, suggesting they had been suffocated. Nearby, investigators found zip ties and plastic bags, further deepening the tragedy surrounding their deaths.
Background and Custody Concerns
During earlier court hearings, Decker had pleaded for visitation rights, emphasizing that camping was a significant family tradition that he shared with his daughters since they were very young. Reports indicate that Decker often lived out of his truck and had a precarious housing situation. In September, a judge granted him visitation rights every other weekend during daytime hours. However, on one such custody visit, it is alleged that Decker abducted and murdered his daughters. Their mother reported them missing when Decker failed to return them on May 30.
Manhunt and Reward
The U.S. Marshals Service has since issued a reward of up to $20,000 for any information leading to Decker’s arrest. He is wanted on three counts of murder and is described as a 5-foot-8-inch, 190-pound white male with black hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a light-colored shirt and dark shorts. Authorities have cautioned the public against approaching Decker due to safety concerns, as he is a former Army ranger with extensive military training.
Anyone with information regarding his whereabouts is urged to contact the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office tip line at 509-667-6845 or submit a tip online at CCSO’s website.
