Indiana Teen Charged as Adult for Sexual Assault on Disabled Boy

Concerns grow over the safety of vulnerable children as a 15-year-old faces serious charges in a shocking case.

NORTH VERNON, IN — A 15-year-old boy, Landon Doty, has been charged as an adult for allegedly raping a 7-year-old disabled boy, prompting grave concerns from officials regarding the safety of vulnerable children. The charges stem from incidents that reportedly occurred over a period of weeks in April, captured by surveillance cameras on a school bus.

    Judge Describes Accused as "Predator"

Jennings Circuit Magistrate Judge Christopher Doran characterized Doty as a “predator,” emphasizing that his actions demonstrate a calculated awareness of wrongdoing. “It appears in the videos that he would stop his criminal conduct anytime he thought someone may observe him, then continue his criminal conduct when he felt safe to continue without detection,” Judge Doran remarked during the proceedings.

The police report revealed that a school bus monitor first noticed inappropriate behavior when she observed Doty pushing the victim—who is reportedly autistic and nonverbal—off his lap on multiple occasions. Following this report, the monitor notified the bus driver, who pulled over to separate the two students and subsequently contacted school officials to review the bus footage.

    Detailed Charges and Circumstances

The investigation has led to Doty facing multiple serious charges, including:

    • Rape when compelled by force
    • Rape against a mentally disabled individual
    • Child molestation
    • Sexual battery
    • Criminal confinement of an individual under 14
    • Public indecency

Despite his documented behavioral issues, Doty did not have an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) in place, raising further questions about his support within the school system. His alleged statements to police, including “I’m basically screwed,” further highlight the gravity of the situation.

    Detainment and Future Proceedings

Following his charges, Doty was placed in custody without bond. The decision to try him as an adult signifies a shift away from the traditional juvenile court process, as officials express serious concerns over his potential for rehabilitation within that system.

As this case continues to develop, authorities emphasize the need for vigilance to ensure the safety of children, particularly those who are most vulnerable.

The investigation remains ongoing, and further updates will be provided as information becomes available.
