Hate Crime Investigation in Brookline Following Vandalism of Kosher Grocery Store

    Incident Overview

Brookline Police are currently probing a disturbing incident that occurred overnight Sunday when a brick inscribed with the phrase "Free Palestine" was hurled through the window of a local kosher grocery store, The Butcherie. The attack is being classified as a hate crime, raising concerns among community leaders and law enforcement alike.

The incident took place just after midnight at the grocery store located at 428 Harvard Street. Preliminary reports suggest that at least two masked individuals approached the establishment from Coolidge Street before committing the act of vandalism. After the window was smashed, the suspects fled in an unknown direction.

    Community Reaction

“This is deeply concerning and totally unacceptable,” commented Governor Maura Healey in a post on social media platform X. She emphasized that acts of violence and intimidation have no place in communities, expressing solidarity with Jewish residents against antisemitism. “Everyone deserves to live, pray, and do business without fear in Massachusetts,” Healey stated.

The Combined Jewish Philanthropies, an organization actively monitoring the situation, has reached out to the Brookline Jewish community and the owners of The Butcherie to extend their support. Their Communal Security team is coordinating closely with the Brookline Police, while the Center for Combating Antisemitism is collaborating with local groups like the Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) and the Anti-Defamation League (ADL).

    Investigation Details

As of now, police have confirmed that no other local businesses were targeted during this incident. Brookline Police have urged residents in the area to come forward with any video footage that may assist their investigation. Individuals with information about the crime are encouraged to contact the Brookline Detective Division at 617-730-2711.

The police are treating the case with the urgency it warrants, seeking to identify the suspects involved in this alarming act.

Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.

In a climate of growing vigilance against hate crimes, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges some communities face. Brookline officials and local organizations are dedicated to fostering a safe and inclusive environment for all residents.
