Bountiful Blessings: The Joy of Fresh Veggies from Our Lady of Guadalupe’s Garden

Nestled on a serene stretch of land in Frankford, Delaware, the garden at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church is more than just a patch of soil—it’s a vibrant community effort blossoming with purpose and love. This delightful green oasis offers the freshest produce to neighbors in need, brightening lives one veggie at a time.

    A Garden with a Heart

It all began about 14 years ago as a humble project, initiated by parish Eagle Scouts who tended to six modest garden beds. Fast forward to today, and this flourishing endeavor has transformed into a beloved ministry under the Society of St. Vincent de Paul at St. Ann Parish, providing not just food but a sense of community and care to approximately 250 families every month.

    Flavorful Harvests

From crisp lettuce and vibrant green beans to sweet peas, crunchy cucumbers, and vibrant carrots, this garden promises a mouthwatering selection. Each week, volunteers joyfully distribute bags brimming with freshly harvested produce, almost like a buzzing farmer’s market!

Imagine receiving a perfectly picked bag of greens, and the joy of hearing grateful neighbors exclaim, “Gracias, maravilloso!” That’s not just a meal; it’s hope served with a side of love.

    Groovy Gardening Techniques

Master Gardener Steve McCully, with a passion for horticulture, shares that the rich, sandy soil of Sussex County is some of the best in the nation. "It’s just like magic!" he says, attributing the garden’s success to divine blessings and good old-fashioned teamwork. Each planting is meticulously scheduled to ensure a delightful rotation of crops throughout the growing season.

    Buzzing with Potential: Beekeeper’s Delight

But wait, there’s more! This season sees the exciting addition of three beehives thanks to local beekeeper Dean Clark. These little pollinators are not just around for the buzz; they play a crucial role in the garden’s ecosystem, ensuring that every plant gets a little love. Honey produced from the hives won’t be ready until early 2026, but it’s sure to be a sweet finish to this remarkable journey!

    The Gift of Freshness

As Father John Klevence of St. Ann Parish puts it, “Fresh veggies are better than canned, especially for families.” There’s nothing quite like enjoying a tomato straight from the ground to remind you that food can nourish not only the body but the soul.

    Join the Movement

Inspired to make a difference? You don’t need to own a garden to contribute—consider volunteering your time at local food pantries or community gardens. The love put into every carrot, cucumber, and jar of honey is a testament to community spirit, proving that sharing is indeed a way to bring people together.

Let’s celebrate the bounty of the earth, cultivate compassion, and savor every bite of fresh from the garden goodness. After all, it’s not just about food; it’s about feeding the heart, soul, and community.
