Arson Attack on Seoul Subway Linked to Suspect’s Spite Over Divorce Ruling

SEOUL, June 2, 2025 — Authorities in South Korea are investigating a shocking arson incident that occurred on a busy subway train in Seoul, where the alleged perpetrator claimed to have acted out of resentment toward a recent court ruling regarding his divorce.

    Incident Details

The fire erupted on Line No. 5 near Mapo Station around 8:43 a.m. on Saturday. The suspect, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, reportedly doused the interior of the train with paint thinner before igniting it. Following his admission of guilt, police at the Seoul Yeongdeungpo Police Station are preparing to initiate formal arrest proceedings.

Approximately 23 individuals were rushed to hospitals due to smoke inhalation, with an additional 129 passengers receiving treatment on-site. Eyewitness accounts describe the suspect engaging in confrontational remarks with passengers after the fire. One male passenger reportedly confronted him, saying, “You almost killed us,” to which the suspect allegedly responded, “Well, you didn’t die.”

    Damage and Response

The damage from the fire has been substantial, impacting not just the subway car directly struck by flames, but also causing significant smoke damage to two other cars. Rescue authorities have projected the total damages to be around 330 million won (approximately $240,000).

In light of the incident, Seoul Metro, which operates the subway system in the greater Seoul area, is contemplating legal action against the suspect to recoup damages. Officials are also evaluating potential safety deficiencies revealed by the situation, including the lack of real-time transmission for surveillance footage from inside the train to the control center.

    Context and Implications

The suspect’s alleged motivation—an emotional response to an unfavorable divorce ruling—raises unsettling questions about the psychological factors that might drive individuals to commit violent acts. As investigations continue, both law enforcement and the community are grappling with the unsettling reality of such a brazen act occurring in a public transport setting.

Updates will follow as further details emerge regarding the suspect’s motivations and the ongoing investigation.

As authorities work to address the aftermath of this distressing event, they are also focused on ensuring the safety and security of passengers in the city’s bustling transport system.
