The Journey of Mental Health: A Personal Reflection

    Finding Community in Struggle

Dylan Stein, a 28-year-old skier from Summit County, embodies the spirit of an active, vibrant community, yet his story reveals a more profound journey of personal struggle with mental health. Moving from Portland to Summit County in search of healing, Dylan discovered that depression doesn’t simply fade away in new surroundings—it often follows us wherever we go.

    The Illusion of Escape

Dylan initially believed that the breathtaking views and thriving ski culture would cure his long-standing battle with depression. Yet, despite living his dream, he felt frustration and isolation, realizing that happiness and connection weren’t guaranteed in a transient community. "It’s hard to find your community here," he reflects, acknowledging the challenges of establishing relationships in a place where many come and go.

    The Importance of Open Dialogue

Throughout his challenge, Dylan found solace in open conversations, especially with his father, who encouraged emotional vulnerability—a rarity in traditional male narratives. Dylan expresses immense gratitude for this support, emphasizing how critical it can be to have someone who offers a listening ear during difficult times.

"I can’t tell you how much it has meant to have a father that listens… and allows you to be emotional and vulnerable."

While Dylan is fortunate to have family support, many individuals face their struggles alone. He emphasizes the importance of reaching out and sharing one’s feelings, reinforcing the idea that "you are never alone." In his work as the care team coordinator at Building Hope, Dylan actively encourages others to seek help and connect with resources available in their community.

    Therapeutic Pathways

Dylan’s journey includes professional counseling, which he describes as a way to articulate and manage his thoughts. Therapy provides a “safe space” to express feelings, allowing individuals to sort through their emotions. By verbalizing his struggles, he finds clarity and the means to address the root of his dark thoughts.

    Key Approaches to Consider:

    • Therapy: Engaging in counseling can help clarify emotions and promote emotional well-being.
    • Communication: Finding someone to talk to—be it a friend, family member, or therapist—can alleviate feelings of isolation.
    • Community Resources: Local organizations often provide support groups and mental health services, helping connect individuals with shared experiences.

    The Shared Human Experience

Dylan recognizes that struggling with mental health is a universal experience. "Everyone really does struggle in one way or another," he notes. This realization can foster a sense of safety and connection within the community. By acknowledging that many face similar trials, individuals can find comfort in shared experiences.

    Breaking the Stigma

Dylan brings attention to the societal expectations surrounding masculinity, particularly the pressure many men feel to suppress their emotions. He points out the alarming statistic that a majority of suicides are male, drawing attention to the urgent need to address this stigma and encourage open discussions about mental health.

    Conclusion: Climbing the Mountain Together

Ultimately, Dylan’s journey serves as a metaphor for the ongoing nature of mental health—much like a climb up a mountain, it encompasses both peaks and valleys. "I still have bad days,” he shares, yet he emphasizes that everyone is on their own journey, climbing alongside one another.

“There are low points and high points… most importantly, everybody is climbing the mountain. You are never alone.”

In the pursuit of mental wellness, it’s vital to remember that seeking help and connecting with others is not just acceptable—it’s a step toward healing and growth. In this journey, we can learn from one another, uplift each other, and embrace both the struggles and triumphs that define our shared human experience.
