New York City Sees Historic Low in Murders and Shootings

Data Reveals Unprecedented Crime Rates for Early 2025

In a promising development for the safety of New York City, Mayor Eric Adams announced on Sunday that the city has achieved the lowest number of murders and shootings recorded in modern history during the first five months of this year. According to data released by the New York Police Department (NYPD), there were 112 homicides from January to May, falling just short of the previous record of 113, which was noted in both 2014 and 2017.

The month of May saw 18 fatalities, which is one less than the previous low of 19 homicides recorded in May 2019. This ongoing decline marks a significant shift in a city that has long grappled with gun violence.

    Notable Declines in Gun Violence

In addition to the drop in murder rates, shootings in New York City also decreased, with 264 incidents reported from January through May, a slight decline from the 267 violent occurrences in the same months of 2018. In May alone, there were 54 shooting incidents, surpassing the previous low of 61 in May 2019.

Mayor Adams expressed his satisfaction with the new statistics, asserting, “When I took the oath of office as mayor, I made a promise that we would make this city safer and that we would drive down crime. Today, the numbers prove that we have not just kept that promise — we have exceeded it.”

    NYPD’s Response and Future Plans

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch also weighed in, commending the efforts of law enforcement but mentioning the challenges posed by recent criminal justice reforms in the state. “Results like this never happen by accident, and certainly not at a time when the state’s criminal justice laws have made a revolving door out of our criminal justice system,” she remarked.

Tisch highlighted the department’s strategic approach, which includes targeting illegal firearms and employing data-driven policing methods to ensure officers are positioned effectively across the city.

Looking ahead, Tisch announced that the NYPD is set to implement a Summer Violence Reduction Plan aimed at maintaining and furthering these safety gains. “We will not let up,” she declared, reinforcing the commitment to continued vigilance in combating crime.

As the city prepares for the summer months, residents and officials alike hope that these trends will continue, offering a brighter future for New Yorkers.

Further updates are expected as the NYPD executes its summer initiatives and tracks ongoing crime statistics.
