Former Treasurer Indicted for Embezzlement from Tuba-Zangariyye Council

TUBA-ZANGARIYYE, ISRAEL – In a significant development following a thorough investigation by the Israel Police’s Northern District Fraud Unit, the former treasurer of the Tuba-Zangariyye Council has been indicted on charges of embezzling millions of shekels. Authorities confirmed the indictment last Tuesday, revealing that the treasurer’s family members, including his sister and two sons, are also implicated in the crime.

    Investigation Overview

The investigation was initiated after an external accountant, appointed by the Interior Ministry to audit the council’s financial operations, uncovered potential discrepancies in employee salaries. This audit raised red flags, leading to a detailed inquiry into the council’s financial practices.

According to the police, the treasurer managed to siphon off over NIS 1.7 million between 2016 and 2021. The scheme involved inflating salaries and creating fictitious employees on the payroll, with several payments reportedly funneled into accounts held by the treasurer’s sons.

    Charges Filed

In a press statement, the police outlined the specific charges against the treasurer and his relatives. By May 25, 2025, indictments were filed at the Nazareth District Court. The treasurer is facing serious allegations, including:

    • Theft by a public servant
    • Aiding and abetting theft
    • Fraud
    • Money laundering

All four defendants are represented by Attorney Sarit Mizrahi.

    Public Awareness and Legal Proceedings

This case has drawn attention from the public and media since it was made public in January 2024. Following the uncovering of the alleged embezzlement, police executed a search of the treasurer’s home and council offices, gathering evidence that further substantiated the claims against him and his family.

As the legal proceedings unfold, the community awaits further developments in this troubling case. The ongoing investigation underscores the importance of accountability within public offices and serves as a reminder of the responsibilities entrusted to public officials.

    Conclusion

This indictment marks a critical step in addressing financial corruption within local governance structures. Authorities remain committed to prosecuting those involved vigorously, hoping to restore faith in the integrity of public service in the Tuba-Zangariyye community.

Updates regarding the court hearings and any additional information will be reported as they become available.
