PopCon Indy: Where Fandoms Collide in a Colorful Celebration
Indy’s Pop Culture Palooza Returns
Strap in, pop culture lovers! The vibrant streets of downtown Indianapolis are alive once again as PopCon Indy rolls back into town for its much-anticipated twelfth outing at the Indiana Convention Center. This event promises a smorgasbord of entertainment, creativity, and all things fandom—and it’s shaping up to be one for the books!
Indie Creativity Takes Center Stage
What sets PopCon apart from the typical convention? Its celebration of independent creators! While larger events might overshadow indie talent, PopCon shines a spotlight on those unique voices that craft the fabric of our cherished fan communities. Attendees can look forward to a tantalizing mix of activities—from intense video game showdowns to high-energy K-pop dance contests. And for the first time ever, PopCon boasts an inaugural Fashion Show that’s gearing up to be the talk of the town.
Fashion Meets Fandom
Organized by the ever-enthusiastic Fi Black, the fashion show links the worlds of pop culture and alternative style. “Just like pop culture has fandoms and subniches of sci-fi and fantasy,” Black notes, “so does fashion.” Four talented designers will be showcasing their creations, melding imaginative designs with fandom flair. Expect styles that will make you wish you could strut the runway yourself!
Celeb Spotting, Anyone?
And what’s a pop culture convention without a dash of celebrity glamour? This year, over 40 star-studded attendees will grace PopCon, including beloved voice actors like Debi Derryberry—who brought Jimmy Neutron and Toy Story’s zany aliens to life! Derryberry reflects on the emotional connections that fans often share: “Sometimes they cry! I just love to see everyone excited.” Her sentiments echo through the crowd as fans unite over shared nostalgia.
Voice actors Jason Griffith and Pete Capella, known for their roles as Sonic and Silver the Hedgehog respectively, describe the exhilaration of meeting fans. “It’s surreal,” Griffith says, “getting to connect with those who grew up listening to us!”
Not Just Your Average Celeb
But wait, there’s more! Prepare your hearts for Dixie the Praying Dog, an adorable four-legged celebrity who’s stealing hearts at this year’s PurrCon—a cat-loving extension of PopCon. "She fits right in with the other stars,” her owner Brian Calvert shares, clearly proud of his furry companion’s fame.
Fun for the Whole Family
PopCon promises fun for all ages, encouraging families to get in on the cosplay action. With tickets starting at just $20 (and free entry for kids under 10), there’s no excuse not to embrace your inner geek.
