Vigil Held for Shooting Victim in Vallejo Amid Rising Violence

Community Unites in Grief and Urgency for Change

Vallejo, California – A somber gathering took place Thursday evening as local leaders and residents came together to honor the life of George Lee, a 65-year-old man who was fatally shot in the Crest neighborhood. The shooting emphasizes a troubling trend of escalating violence in the area, prompting calls for urgent action from both city officials and community members.

    Tragic Incident Details

The fatal shooting occurred shortly after 9 a.m. on Friday near Griffin Drive, behind the Fairgrounds Plaza, where Lee was well-known for traveling by scooter. Eyewitnesses described a community in shock, with one local worker lamenting, "Honestly, this has become a daily occurrence. We just try to stay inside and stay safe whenever we hear any loud noises."

The recent death marks yet another incident in a neighborhood grappling with a rise in crime, including a June shooting that left two women injured.

    Collective Response from Officials

Vallejo City Councilmember JR Matulac expressed the exasperation felt by many in the community. "We have had enough. This is not acceptable," he said, emphasizing the need for actions to counteract the troubling surge in gun violence. Mayor Andrea Sorce echoed these sentiments, affirming city efforts to confront the issue. “We see you, we hear you, and we’re not going to allow this to be normalized,” she stated.

In a bid to enhance safety, the city has earmarked $100,000 for violence-intervention services and is working with Solano County sheriff’s deputies to increase policing efforts. Sorce noted, “I want to focus on us being together in community while we mourn and develop our path forward.”

    Call for Healing Resources

The community’s cry for change was reinforced by advocates like Ebony Antoine, founder of Broken by Violence. She remarked, "Hurt people hurt people, but healed people heal people. It’s imperative that we get the healing resources in our community, ASAP."

The need for proactive measures was underlined by the earlier shooting of a 4-year-old girl in January, a tragedy that still lingers in the community’s memory. Tinisch Collins, executive director of Californians for Safety and Justice, emphasized that addressing the root causes of violence requires "intentionality and commitment."

    Looking Forward

As Vallejo grapples with these unsettling trends, community leaders and residents remain hopeful that sustained efforts toward healing and prevention will pave the way for a safer environment. “This is not the place to come and commit violence,” Collins stated firmly, underscoring the collective resolve to reclaim the peace within their community.

The investigation into Lee’s shooting is ongoing. Local authorities have not yet released details regarding potential suspects or motives.
