Florida Daycare Operator Arrested in Baby’s Death After Year-Long Investigation

ST. PETERSBURG, FL – A 31-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with the tragic death of a 9-month-old boy nearly a year ago. Desiree Rentz faces charges of aggravated manslaughter of a child and misrepresentation of a childcare facility resulting in death, according to the St. Petersburg Police Department.

    Incident Details

The tragic incident occurred on July 25, 2024, when emergency responders were alerted to a distressing situation involving Timothy David Smith. Upon arriving at Rentz’s apartment, authorities found the infant unresponsive after reportedly failing to wake from a nap. In a devastating twist, Rentz was allegedly operating an unlicensed daycare out of her one-bedroom apartment, with more than a dozen children in her care at the time of the incident.

    Unlicensed and Unsafe Environment

Investigations revealed that Rentz had falsely claimed to be a licensed daycare provider. While she displayed credentials for temporary foster care—which allowed for only one child—the Florida Department of Health and the Department of Children and Families confirmed that she had never been authorized to run a daycare facility. This revelation raises serious concerns about the safety and oversight of the children left in her care.

Cause of Death and Legal Action

An autopsy performed on Smith indicated that he had been administered cough syrup that is not recommended for children under the age of four. Shockingly, the infant’s parents were unaware of this medication and had not provided any consent for its use. The combination of unregulated childcare practices and the administration of inappropriate medication contributed to the charges against Rentz.

The U.S. Marshals Service played a crucial role in her arrest, which took place nearly one year after the boy’s death. As of Wednesday, Rentz remains in custody with a bond set at $175,000.

    Awaiting Further Developments

While authorities have not disclosed the reasons for the delayed legal actions, the case shines a light on ongoing issues of child safety and regulatory compliance in the daycare sector. As this story develops, community members and parents are left grappling with the implications of Rentz’s actions and the tragic loss of young Timothy.
